What is TMJ Disorder?

TMJ disorder, also known as TMD, is a condition that impacts the two jaw joints that hinge your jaw to your skull, called the temporomandibular joints. These help you open and close your mouth to speak, eat, yawn, and so much more. However, when they’re strained or the muscles around them are tense, it can lead to discomfort and affect their function, making basic daily tasks more difficult.

Symptoms of TMJ Disorder

Could your jaw pain be caused by temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD)? TMD can cause a variety of uncomfortable symptoms. Here are some common indicators to help you recognize the need for Portland TMJ treatment:

  • Pain in the Jaw Joint, Ear, or Neck – With TMJ disorder, you will generally feel an aching pain in the jaw, and it usually worsens when you open your mouth, bite down, or chew. (You may also experience jaw pain in the morning.)
  • Tingling or Numbness in the Facial Region – If you feel numb or a tingling sensation in your jaw or your cheeks, you may have TMD. Give us a call if symptoms persist.
  • Clicking, Popping, and Locking of the Jaw – This is common with TMJ disease and may occur when chewing food or talking.

How We Treat TMJ Disorder

In order to determine which TMJ treatment in Burlingame would work best for your situation, we would first need to complete an examination. Once we confirm that you have TMJ disorder, we can design a treatment plan to help you reclaim your life and daily comfort.

Occlusal Splints

Occlusal splints are customized oral appliances that are designed to be worn when you sleep. They help shift the jaw into a naturally comfortable position to prevent the jaw joints from straining. The splints also prevent teeth grinding, which can exacerbate TMD symptoms.

Equilibration/Occlusal Adjustments

Sometimes, TMJ pain can be caused by a bite imbalance as a result of misshapen teeth or ill-fitted restorations. Occlusal adjustment involves re-balancing the bite to reduce strain on one or both of the jaw joints, minimizing pain and discomfort.

BOTOX® Injections

For patients who need relief from their TMJ pain, we also offer BOTOX injections. These can be administered to the muscles that support the jaw joints to help them relax, minimizing tension and improving your comfort, as well as your ability to open and close your mouth.
