What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is an oral infection that develops due to tartar and plaque build-up, which increases the amount of bacteria in your mouth. The bacteria feed off of carbohydrates in the mouth and produce acidic waste that erodes the tooth enamel and puts you at a greater risk of decay and tooth loss.

There are two stages of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis can be treated and reversed, while periodontitis is the more advanced stage, which can be managed to preserve your natural smile and oral health.

Scaling & Root Planing

During the deep cleaning process, our team will systematically remove all plaque and tartar accumulated on the teeth, as far down as the pockets of the gums. We will then remove hardened deposits of bacteria from the roots of your teeth. This will help the gum tissue healthily reattach to the teeth to protect the vulnerable underlying structures. The goal for this treatment is to keep the infection from progressing and prevent worsening symptoms.
