Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is involved in an initial comprehensive oral exam?
A. During the comprehensive oral exam, we will review and discuss your medical history and take your blood pressure. We will address any specific concerns you may have regarding your oral health and teeth, including any cosmetic concerns. In most cases, digital x-rays and photos and a baseline periodontal evaluation will be done. The doctor will then examine the head and neck region, in addition to the mouth. This intraoral screening is completed to help identify any possible problems, such as oral pre-cancer or cancerous lesions. Finally, the teeth and gums are thoroughly examined. All of the findings are then discussed with you, and any questions you may have are answered.

Q. How old should my child be for his/her first dental visit?
A. We recommend that you bring your child in for a first visit sometime between 2 and 3 years of age. Sometimes this first visit is a short one, but allows us to make sure everything is developing normally. It also helps your child get used to the office and staff, which is very helpful in preparing for future visits. We offer a wonderful first dental experience for your child, structuring the appointment for each individual child and his or her personality

Q. If I just want a cleaning, do I need to get x-rays taken?
A. As part of the exam, x-rays are often taken to help the doctor see between the teeth to assess whether there is decay. We also use these films to assess overall jaw bone health and periodontal status. Detecting problems and decay of the teeth early allows us to recommend proper treatment to you, and often a more conservative procedure can be done.
